Midway, Kentucky is located in Woodford County, midway between the cities of Frankfort and Lexington. Originally inhabited by Indian Mound Builders and settled as early as 1771, the town of Midway was established in 1833 with the coming of the Lexington and Ohio Railroad, which opened its line between Frankfort and Lexington in 1834 and ran its first steam locomotive through Midway in January of 1835. Today, Midway is a charming and friendly town of approximately 1,500 residents who enjoy the small town atmosphere and warm community spirit embodied by the town and its citizens. With its agreeable seasonal climate that includes hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters, Midway is a great place to live or visit!
Located in the Kentucky Bluegrass Region directly in the center of Kentucky’s famous horse country, Midway is home to museums, distilleries, wineries, thoroughbred horse farms, and a historical district that features 176 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic Weisenberger Mill has been in continual operation since 1865 on its original site on South Elkhorn Creek, where water from the creek is still used to power the twin turbines that produce more than seventy products, including flours, corn meals, grains, brans, grits, yeast, and a variety of mixes. The Offutt-Cole Tavern, circa 1780s, is located three miles south of town and was Kentucky’s first stagecoach stop, and the birthplace of Zeralda Cole James, mother of legendary outlaws, Frank and Jesse James.
Midway is home to several thoroughbred horse farms, including the Airdrie Stud, owned and operated by former Kentucky governor Brereton Jones, and considered the birthplace of the Kentucky thoroughbred industry.
Midway’s downtown business section on Main/Railroad Street is part of the city’s extensive historic district and home to a number of quaint shops and unique eating establishments, as well as the Historic Midway Museum Store and the Thoroughbred Theater, a popular venue that showcases local talent in community musicals and theater performances.
Both residents and visitors alike will enjoy the warmth and community spirit that embody this historic community. No matter where you choose to shop, dine, or worship in Midway, chances are good you are standing in one the town’s many historic buildings!
