The city was founded in 1775 by a group of frontier explorers led by William McConnell, who named the site in honor of the first battle of the Revolutionary War that was fought in Lexington, Massachusetts. Today, the city of Lexington is Kentucky’s second-largest city and home to a population of almost 300,000 residents.
